A Turkish official told Reuters last week he would visit Turkey on Feb. 12. Ankara has sought to persuade Russia to return to the Black Sea Grain Initiative - brokered by Turkey and the United Nations - that ensured the safe export of Ukrainian grain during the war via the Black Sea. Speaking at a press conference in the Maltese capital Valletta, Fidan said Turkey was working with Ukraine and Russia to revive the accord. The farmers drove tractors and trucks from a vegetable market in the centre of the tiny Mediterranean island to Floriana, a town near the capital Valletta, waving banners and placards that accused the EU of "killing its own farmers". "No farmers, no food, no future," read one placard attached to a tractor. Farmers have also protested in several European capitals and blocked streets in Brussels on Thursday while EU leaders were holding a meeting there. On Friday farmers blocked the Dutch-Belgian border and occupied roads in Greece, though French farmers started lifting their blockades after the government in Paris made concessions.

British bank HSBC said on Tuesday it had agreed to sell its business in Canada to Royal Bank of Canada for $13.5 billion Canadian dollars ($10.04 billion) in cash. The transaction is expected to complete in late 2023 and will result in a pre-tax gain of $5.7 billion for HSBC, the bank said in a statement. The sale comes as HSBC pursues a strategy of focusing its resources on its core markets, amid pressure from its biggest shareholder Ping An to improve its performance. The deal enables RBC to grab further market share in its home market, adding 130 branches and more than 780,000 retail and commercial customers.

HSBC reported on Tuesday a 42% tumble in third-quarter pretax profits on the back of losses on the sale of its French unit and rising bad loans, but its interest income surged as banks benefit from rising rates around the world. The London-headquartered bank posted a pretax profit of $3.15 billion for the three months ended Sept. 30. That was down from $5.4 billion a year ago, but well above the $2.45 billion average of analyst estimates compiled by the bank. "We remain on track to achieve our cost targets for 2022 and 2023," said Noel Quinn, HSBC's Chief Executive Officer.
